The 4th annual Burke Mountain Sled Dog Dash is only 9 days away and it is now crunch time for our crew. Although East Burke is located in a snow belt we have not been immune to the weather pattern that has effected the Northeast this year. Luckily, because the grooming began in January we are able to build a solid foundation on most of our trail system that has persisted throughout these terrible winter conditions and will allow us to run this great event. I have personally spent the last two days shoveling snow from the sides of the trail to fill minor imperfections and removed high spots in the trail by hand along side our crew at Kingdom Trails and things are looking good. The crew at Kingdom Trails will continue to buff the trails everyday for the next week and we anticipate very good conditions for the event, even if we do not receive any new snow.
Unfortunately, the terrain below a short section of trail that we put in this year is very rocky and requires too much snow to repair. Due to the location of this section of trail in our system we ultimately lost 3.3 miles of trail that were to be used in the 8-dog and open classes. Therefore, we have rerouted both of these trails and each of them will be shorter than originally advertised. Secondarily, both the 8-dog and open classes will have 3.0 miles of head-on passing (1.5 miles in each direction). Yes, all of the other trails will still be loops. The section of trail where the head-on passing takes place in the 8-dog and open classes is relatively straight. Open teams running up to 16 dogs last year had no problems passing on this trail. The new distance for the 8-dog class is 7.5 miles and the open class is 10.0 miles. Although we are currently receiving fresh snow and anticipate receiving more snow next week, the crew at Kingdom Trails will not attempt to repair the damaged section of trail at the last minute. They will continue to focus their efforts on turning what is now a very good trail into an excellent one. We do apologize for the change in distance but promise to make up for the lack of quantity with quality.
Last year we had a number of requests to have separate 1- and 2-dog skijoring classes and run them on the longer 6-dog trail. We originally agreed to try this format and advertised it accordingly despite this lengthening the race day. However, we currently have no skijorers signed up for the dual events. Therefore, due to the lack of interest in the dual events we are now eliminating the 2-dog skijoring class on the longer trail 6-dog and using the same format as last year. There will only be one skijoring class that will begin at approximately 1:15 pm. The starting order will be 3-dog skijorers, followed by 2-dog skijorers, followed by 1-dog skijorers. All three classes will be ISDRA sanctioned. You will receive your actual start time in your welcome packet at registration sign-in on Friday night.
Please remember that early registration will close at 5 pm on Wednesday, February 24th. You simply need to register online at www.sleddogdash.com or by phone and payment can be made on-site Friday night. The bib-draw will take place on Thursday. Early registered drivers indicating that they are sportsman or recreational mushers will be pooled separately and their bibs will be drawn at the end of their class. Late registrations will be accepted up to on-site Friday night. Late entrants will be pooled at the end of the group behind all of the early registered drivers.
